Essay on Labour Day
We celebrate Labor Day to honor the contributions of working women and labor men. On the first day of May, we celebrate Labor Day in India. Apart from this, we also know it as May Day. This day is celebrated as International Workers' Day all over the world. This day is celebrated as a national holiday in more than 80 countries around the world including India.
Origin of Labor Day
It was first celebrated in 1923 in Chennai (erstwhile Madras) and its history dates back to 1886. This was the day when the labor unions of the United States decide to go on strike to fulfill their demands.
Even though the protests in the US did not yield any immediate results, it helped in setting the norm of 8-hour workday in India and other countries of the world. Since then, Labor Day has been celebrated as a day of parades and demonstrations around the world.

The first Labor Day holiday was observed in New York City on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, according to the plan of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union celebrated its second Labor Day holiday exactly one year later, on September 5, 1883.
By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making the first Monday of September each year a national holiday.
